Are You Prepared for an IRS Audit?
$45.6 billion dollars was approved by the Senate to help the IRS to IMPROVE ENFORCEMENT which is causing a lot of us to become concerned.
WHAT
COULD HAPPEN?
4 Ways to Prepare in Case You are Audited
1. Be sure that all expenses claimed on your tax return are accurately supported by receipts.- Take your time and review all income/expenses claimed BEFORE SIGNING
- ONLY YOU, not your tax preparer, is responsible for the information reported on your tax return AFTER YOU SIGN IT
- Compare your tax return with the previous year and question any differences to be sure you can support any changes
- Ask alot of questions to learn the laws used to prepare your tax return
- Have your filed tax return amended if you catch the errors BEFORE the IRS catches them
- Confirm they have represented others in audits in the past
- Ask questions to find out the procedures they used in the audits and the results of the audit
- Be aware that a lot of INCOMPETENT TAX PREPARERS cannot be reached for help when you receive the audit notice
- If you don't file the tax return, the IRS will file it for you based only on the income you made since they don't have access to the expenses
- Be sure to call the IRS immediately if you receive any and all notices to avoid going into collections
Just this week, I have received 3 requests for assistance with audits from new clients whose recently filed 2021 taxes were flagged for an AUDIT.
Two of these tax returns were prepared by INCOMPETENT and UNSCRUPLOUS tax preparers who reported unsupported amounts on the tax returns and were not able to be reached for help with the audit. The 3rd one had some obviously OVERSTATED claims for deductions that were RED FLAGS and easily caught by IRS's new systems.
